How Venues Can Improve Accessibility with Listen Technologies' Auri

blog-header

Auri is the first complete Auracast broadcast audio-based assistive listening solution designed to improve accessibility in public venues. Developed through a collaboration between Listen Technologies and Ampetronic, Auri aims to help venues and end users benefit from Auracast broadcast audio technology. Venues can utilize Auri to meet accessibility requirements with technology that is easy to use and delivers exceptional audio quality.

Understanding Auracast Technology

Auracast broadcast audio is a Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) standard that allows audio to be broadcast to an unlimited number of Auracast-compatible devices simultaneously. This technology aims to improve audio accessibility and create better listening experiences in various public and private settings. Unlike classic Bluetooth, Auracast does not require pairing between devices. Instead, users can select an Auracast broadcast channel, similar to choosing a Wi-Fi network.

A key feature of Auracast is its interoperability, meaning any Auracast device is compatible with other brands. This is because Auracast is a standard within the specifications of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). Auracast also significantly increases the range of audio transmission, extending to about 100 meters (328 feet), a substantial improvement over the limited range of classic Bluetooth, which lands around 10 meters (32 Feet).

Auracast is optimized for high-quality audio with extremely low latency. The system ensures a strong audio signal that eliminates the need for lip-syncing with video on a television screen. This makes Auracast suitable for live applications such as music, spoken word, video synchronization, and gaming. Potential applications of Auracast include transmitting audio from public displays to personal listening devices, facilitating audio sharing among multiple listeners, and enabling direct broadcast of announcements in transportation hubs to travelers' hearing devices.

Auri is the first complete Auracast broadcast audio-based assistive listening solution that allows venues and end users to access the emerging Auracast market. It includes networked installation transmitters, dedicated receivers, and accessories. Venues can use the Auri system to meet accessibility requirements, even before all end users have Auracast-enabled devices.

Key Components of the Auri System

The Auri system, developed by Listen Technologies and Ampetronic, includes several key components:

Auri TX2N Transmitter: This professional-grade transmitter supports multiple audio inputs in mono or stereo and can be expanded for additional coverage or channels. A version with a Dante network audio interface is also available.

Auri RX1 Receiver: Compliant with global accessibility requirements, it supports both open and encrypted broadcasts and includes a neck loop lanyard for telecoil-equipped hearing aids.

Auri Docking Stations (D4 & D16): These docking stations are available in 4- and 16-unit models for charging and configuring receivers. They can store settings and apply them to all docked units.

Auri Manager Software: A Windows-based tool, the Auri Manager Software facilitates system setup and management. It enables operators to configure devices, update firmware, and control access to broadcasts.

The Auri system also features a complete line of accessories, including headphones and neck loops, also known as personal induction loops. When combined with neck loops and appropriate signage, Auri helps venues comply with the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and other global accessibility requirements for assistive listening. An accessibility calculator is available for determining the number of assistive listening devices required and can be found on the Listen Technologies website.

Enhancing Accessibility with Auri

Auri supports improved audio quality, reduced power consumption, improved interoperability, easier development of hearing aids and TWS earbuds, new audio device types, and the emergence of Auracast broadcast audio which enables public and private broadcast use cases for consumer and assistive listening applications, and a much larger transmission range. By adopting the Auri system, venues can provide compliant audio experiences to a broad audience, including those with hearing loss, thereby promoting inclusivity and ensuring clear and accessible sound for everyone. This is especially important considering the World Health Organization's (WHO) projection that 2.5 billion people worldwide will experience some degree of hearing loss by 2050.
